For my thoughts on the new Buffy season when it was new, go here...  Now that its over lets take a look at things...  There may be spoliers ahead...

Frankly much of this Season sucked.  I mean really really really sucked.  There were some dire stories in here and the rather trite Drugs = Magic Willow thread was used poorly.  The Buffy/Spike thing was also not what we've come to expect from Josh Whedon.  And no amount of strong Season finales will make the Is he/Isn't he shifting of Spikes character on a weekly basis wash with me.

The departure of Anthony Head back to the UK also hurt the cast dynamic, as did the continued portrayal of Dawn and Tara.  Amber Benson I think should sue - there were flashes that there was a character in there somewhere but even so it was pretty quickly squashed.  Some of the episodes were instantly forgettable.  In fact, thinking back over the last 20 or show shows only the final 4 and the musical one really come to mind.  The Trio of nerds was abysmal, which is a shame because the character of Jonathon is actually quite interesting.

The musical one was pretty astounding, not for the singing but the way it actually worked.  I was rather impressed to be honest.  In particular the best line, "Oh, we've figured out that its the Lord of the Dance, not the evil one, just a demon..."

The finale was also excellent.  Bad Willow, Anthony Head coming back, the cliff hanger: all mark what is hopefully a shift to a lighter format for Season 7 and away from the Buffy Soap Opera which Season 6 became.  As the summer grinds on I am sure that there will be lots and lots of stuff on what Season 7 holds, the question is will it be the last one?  They are all getting on a bit, and moving past that period when a 25 year old can pretend to be a 19 year old.  They are all starting to look like the cast of Friends - I suspect it might be time to let them have their lives back and for Josh Wheadon to concentrate on other things.
